Harry, Meghan and Netflix Deal
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently announced a production deal with Netflix, and the company is excited to have landed the buzzed-about deal, and in an interview, CEO Reed Hastings explained why.
“It's gonna be epic entertainment—so excited about that deal," Hastings said. “I can’t tell you any more about it at this point, but I think it'll be some of the most exciting, most viewed content next year.”
The deal was announced alongside news that Meghan and Harry would be starting an as-yet-unnamed production company, operating separately from their future charitable venture, Archewell. In his comments, Hastings also confirmed that Meghan and Harry are interested in production, not on-camera roles. “The real focus for them is on being producers and on building a production capacity, so that's the key thing,” Hastings said.
Hastings also invested his vote of confidence in their abilities as producers, despite their inexperience. “They've developed a great eye for story, and we'll be working with them on that basis,” he said. “They're smart—they were shopping it around across all of the major companies, and I think we really put together the best complete package.”
The deal was announced about five months after the couple’s exit from their roles as senior royals became official on March 31. But as early as January, sources told the Daily Mail that a setting up a production company was in the cards, with one mentioning the forthcoming series on mental health that Harry co-produced with Oprah as a touchstone. “The sorts of deals they will do will be more along the lines of the documentary series the duke is executive producing on mental health for Apple TV,” the insider said. “It’s a new model, admittedly, but they are determined to prove to the family that this can work.”
It Seems that we’ll have to wait until 2021 to see the fruits of the deal.
